The president of the Romanian Football Federation, Răzvan Burleanu, said on Thursday, at the end of the meeting of the FRF Executive Committee, that renouncing the rule of using an Under-21 player in Superliga “would take the Romanian football 5-6 years ago”.
Burleanu does not believe that FCSB financier, Gigi Becali, who is also a deputy, will be able to convince the parliamentary majority to vote a law against the U21 rule, reports Agerpres.
- “I could not say that the Under-21 rule is more important than others, but it is a very important rule in all this puzzle built in the last 10 years in Romanian football. Therefore, giving up the Under-21 rule, as Mr. Gigi Becali wants, I think it would take Romanian football 5-6 years ago.
- I hope that, if he has obtained a mandate of a parliamentarian and has this privilege to represent Romania, to contribute through its initiatives and to support the development of Romanian football and not to confuse it. For a legislative path, the vote of a parliamentarian is not sufficient, and I doubt that there is a parliamentary majority today who wants to return Romanian football 5-6 years ago.
- And the U21 rule has already shown its fruit, in the sense that the transfer amounts collected by clubs exceed the amounts for all the other players transferred from Romanian football ”, said Răzvan Burleanu.
Starting the 2022-2023 edition, the clubs in Superliga have the obligation to permanently have an Under-21 player. The rule imposed by the Romanian Football Federation was challenged at the beginning by most clubs in the first step. Lately, FCSB financier, Gigi Becali, has announced that he will initiate a legislative project to eliminate it because it “affects the commercial activity”.
