Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Thursday that there will be no European money in his country if Ukraine will become a member of the European Union, reports the MTI agency, quoted by Agerpres.
The head of the Hungarian executive said that the issue of Ukraine's accession could be decisive for the future of Hungary for the next 15-20 years.
“There is a decision, I could say that there is an order from Brussels in this regard, which they do not even keep secret, as the President of the European Commission Von Der Leyen has already announced in the European Parliament that Ukraine's accession should occur by 2030, which means in less than five years,” Orban said.
The prime minister of Hungary seems to refer to the comments made by Ursula von der Leyen on February 24, when she declared Ukraine, she has a chance to adhere to the European Union before 2030, if she will continue the reforms until then.
She made the comments in the margin of the Kiev summit, organized on the day on which three years have passed since the triggering of the Russian invasion.
Asked about an exact term for the accession of Ukraine, Ursula von der Leyen said that the accession process is “based on merit” and that, in order to be beneficial for both the candidate and the European Union, accession must respect a certain standard
“If someone claims to bring home EU money and support Ukraine's accession to the EU then obviously mind, because if Ukraine becomes a member of the European Union there will be no money to bring home,” Viktor Orban said on Thursday.
In his opinion, in the case of Ukraine's accession to the community block, the most would have to suffer the Hungarian agricultural sector.
The European Commission recommended in November 2023 the start of EU accession negotiations for Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova.
