The US State Department will be reorganized to abolish the redundant offices and some programs that do not meet the US external interests under Donald Trump's presidency, the head of American diplomacy, Marco Rubio, announced on Tuesday, according to Agerpres.
“This approach concerns the department from its base, from offices to embassies,” said in a Marco Rubio statement, which described this reorganization as part of the agenda “America First” (America in the first place), the official doctrine of Trump's policy.
“The regional functions will be consolidated to increase the functionality, the redundant offices will be eliminated, and the non-state programs that are not in accordance with the US essential interests will cease to exist,” explained the head of American diplomacy.
For example, he exemplified this, the activities under the sub -secretary for civil security, human rights and democracy will be transferred to the subordination of a new coordinator for external assistance and humanitarian business.
The new head of US diplomacy has criticized the excessive growth of the state department over the years, describing this institution as “swollen, bureaucratic and unable to fulfill its essential diplomatic mission in this new era of great competition.”
The reorganization plan, on which the American Congress has already been notified, stipulates the elimination of 132 of the 734 offices and offices of the State Department, and the undersecretarians will draw up 15%reduction plans, according to an internal memorandum of this institution consulted by Reuters.
It is not yet clear how many employees of the State Department will be dismissed, but according to a separate document posted by Rubio on the social network X, about 700 positions would be abolished.
However, the reorganization plan seems to be less severe than many of the institution's employees, who will maintain departments that deal with issues such as democracy, human rights or refugees.
The extensive reorganization now announced by Rubio comes after Trump has ordered, in February, the reorganization of US external service – US diplomatic body – to ensure that US diplomats follow its foreign policy agenda.
US officials said in March that the State Department is preparing to close several diplomatic and consular missions, but Marco Rubio's announcement does not mention this issue. “This is an exclusive internal plan. It has nothing to do with external missions. But this does not mean that there will be no decisions to concern external missions,” explained a responsible.
The subordination of Rubio is currently the USA Agency for International Development (USAID), whose activity has been minimized and Trump wants to abolish it after accusing it of supporting the “Fake News Press” favorable to former president Joe Biden.
In addition to purely humanitarian actions, USAID Funding abroad from its annual budget of about $ 40 billion, such as NGOs, activists and media to promote “good democratic practices”, thus being accused of supporting ideological causes and involvement in actions to destabilize some governments.
