On the plate, which was installed after the act of vandalism in 2020, was the inscription: “The mass grave of Ukrainians who died in battles with the Soviet troops of the CVD in monastery forests on the night of March 2 to 3, 1945.”
A few days ago, a new one appeared in its place with a completely different content. It is engraved by the inscription: “The mass grave of Ukrainians, members of the UPA, responsible for terror and genocide against the defenseless Polish, Ukrainian and Jewish population. Lord God, have mercy on them and not the most proud of them the terrible deeds that they committed against their brothers. Forgiveness does not mean oblivion, but the healing of pain.” In addition, on the cross, instead of a trident, a Christian cross appeared.
The police representative Mazhen Mrochkovsk said that law enforcement officers received information about this from the border guards and left for the scene. The investigation is underway, the police are trying to establish the individuals of those who replaced the sign.
The portal notes that this case can again aggravate the tension in relations associated with historical memorable dates on the Polish-Ukrainian border.
Context
On March 2–3, 1945, near the village of Verrat Tomashevsky, the Lublin Voivodeship of the Hundred Avengers-2, the Venitera-2, took a battle with the superior forces of the NKVD troops, recalls “Historical Pravda”. The UPA forces were scattered and did not expect an attack. As a result, 62 (according to other sources, 66) of the UPA warrior diedas well as many civilians of Verhrat and neighboring villages. After the battle, the bodies of the rebels were collected and buried in a mass grave on Mount Monastery.
At this place there was a cross and an unfinished monument for a long time, since the local authorities did not give consent to it. In 2000 alone, the Polish council of protecting the memory of struggle and martyrdom on the basis of an agreement between the governments of Ukraine and Poland poured a mound and erected a monument. On the memorial table, which was under the cross, was the inscription “Field for free Ukraine”, and the names, surnames and date of birth of the dead were also indicated.
The object was damaged several times, writes zlubaczowa.pl. In 2015, someone broke a board with the names of the UPA members, the cross was painted in Polish national colors, and Ukrainian symbols were replaced by Polish. In 2015, the cross was painted in white and red color (Flag of Poland), and the sign was also broken. In 2020, the monument was again subjected to vandalism. The board, already damaged, was completely broken, and its fragments were thrown into the pit. Some time later, a new bilingual plate was installed without the names of the UPA members.
