The former deputy chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia, General Wadim Szamarin, was sentenced on Thursday to seven years of penal colony for taking bribes – the Interfax agency said.

Szamarin was also deprived of military rank, and his property estimated at 36 million rubles (PLN 1.7 million) was confiscated. The defense of Szamarin announced that he would not appeal against the sentence.
The military, who also held the function of the head of the Main Board of Communications of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, was detained last year. He was accused of adopting property benefits of particularly high value.
This is another of the Russian military commanders and officials of the Ministry of Defense, who were detained in connection with corruption allegations. (PAP)
