Nikita Vodopol, water treat

The day got its name in honor of Nikita of the Confessor, the abbot of the Midiki Fosty, who lived in the 8-9 centuries.

In Nikita, a rapid melting of snow begins, and ice floes rushing along the river. The flood could bring many troubles: if the river overflow, then he would sweep away everything that will come across her way. Therefore, it was important to understand in advance how much water would disperse. The height of the flood was determined according to various signs: by the height of the kulik nest or by mole -holes (the rodent will never dig the earth below the boundaries of the future spill).

It was believed that on this day it wakes up from the winter hibernation of water. The peasants tried to appease him – someone was treated to bread, some porridge, some chicken giblets. They said that even if the water is not eaten – the food is useful in spring to all the creatures that live in the river depth.

The fishermen tried especially; They poured oil into the river and asked for good luck in their business. The most superstitious of them prepared a noble gift to the waterfront – three days before Nikitin’s day they bought from the gypsies, without bargaining, the thinner horse and fed it with bread and cuffs. On the last evening, they smeared it with honey, tapes wove into the mane – and drowned in the river. The worst sign for the fishermen was if the water was refused to accept the gift.

True, there was one more, more everyday: if the ice does not go to the Nikitin day, fish fishing will be thin.
