The Central Electoral Bureau announced on Saturday night that USR cannot do an election campaign for Nicușor Dan, because another candidate, Elena Lasconi, has registered in the presidential race.
The Central Electoral Bureau (BEC) decided, in the meeting of April 12, 2025, following a complaint filed by the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (Gold), for the Union Save Romania (USR) party to eliminate more political promotion materials posted on a large online platform.
In the reasoning of the decision, BEC notes that “the legislator has axiomatically regulated the hypothesis that each party or political alliance can propose a single candidate”, and the renunciation of this candidacy can take place “at the latest until 19.03.2025, at 24:00”.
According to the bulb, USR officially proposed the candidacy of Elena Lasconi and, consequently, “cannot do an election campaign of any kind to another candidate participating in the same electoral process.”
BEC considers that by promoting Nicușor Dan in the analyzed materials, although this is not the official candidate of the party, the USR “makes electoral propaganda, within the meaning of art. 36 paragraph (7) of Law no.
“By the support granted after the expiration of the date of finalization of the candidates of another candidate than the initially proposed, in fact, the USR party, ignoring the same legal provisions, makes a new candidacy proposal after the expiry of the candidates' period, which is inadmissible,” says the BEC, who has published the decision.
