The Trump administration has passed over 6,000 immigrants in their lives as deceased people, canceling their social security numbers and thus blocking their access to work, social benefits or basic services, reports The Guardian who cites familiar sources with measures.

The measure is part of a larger plan to restrict the access of immigrants to federal systems and encourage them to leave the United States. The cited officials claim that the purpose is for the data subjects to “self-expulsion” and return to the countries of origin.

According to American legislation, the social security number – a unique nine -digit code – is essential for obtaining a legal job, opening a bank account, renting a home or paying taxes.

It is not clear so far how the over 6,000 immigrants were selected. However, the White House led by Trump is aimed at temporarily in the United States through programs during the Biden administration, including over 900,000 immigrants who have entered the US using the CBP One applied during that mandate.

On Monday, the Department for Internal Security (DHS) revoked the legal status of the immigrants who used the respective application. They had generally been authorized to stay in the United States for two years, with a right to work, but now they are asked to self-expulsion.

Separately, a federal judge blocked the plans of the Trump administration on Thursday to force several hundred thousand citizens of Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela – who have temporary legal status – to leave the country until the end of April.

No representative of the Social Security Administration (SSA) commented on the information that immigrants in life were included in the register of deceased persons. SSA manages the largest federal database on deaths, which includes over 142 million records since 1899.

According to Privacy Act, the Social Security Administration can send data to the law enforcement authorities only in limited cases, such as committing a violent crime or other illegal activities.

Also this week, DHS and the Treasury Department have signed an agreement that allows the internal income service (IRS) to share the tax data of the immigrant and Imigration Agency (ICE). The purpose is to identify and deport the persons considered by the government as being in the US without legal status. ICE will be able to send IRS a list of names and addresses for checks.

The interim commissioner of the IRS, Melanie Krause, who held the position of February, resigned after the agreement.

In another case related to access to data, a federal judge blocked in March a team led by Elon Musk (Doge) to social security systems, describing its activity as “a fishing expedition” in the federal databases. The team aimed to restructure the government apparatus and reduce the number of federal officials.

Skye Perryman, president of the Democracy Forward organization, who challenged several measures of the Trump administration in court, said he would consider a new process regarding the abusive use of social security numbers. “This president continues to act outside the law, violating the legislation and abusing our system of checks and balances,” said Perryman.
