Sensors who may have been installed by Russia to spy on the British nuclear submarines were discovered in the waters around the United Kingdom, according to an investigation published by The Sunday Times on Sunday, quoted by AFP.
According to this publication, several sensors of this kind were discovered after failing on the shore, while others were located by Royal Navy.
Army officials and London intelligence services have told The Sunday Times that the purpose of installing such sensors could be collecting information about the four nuclear submarines of the British army, Agerpres reports.
“Without a doubt there is a war in the Atlantic. It is a game of mice and cat that lasts from the end of the Cold War and intensifies again,” says an unspecified official of the army.
According to the same publication, Russian devices operated from a distance would have been discovered near the underwater communications and yachts of the Russian oligarchs would have been used for submarine recognition operations.
Contacted by AFP, the British Ministry of Defense described these reports as “speculation”. “Our nuclear discouragement force continues to patrol the world's oceans without being detected, as it has been 56 years old,” the ministry added.
