Ukrainian officials said on Monday that they suspect Russia involvement in the assassination of the former president of the Parliament, Andrii Parubi, after a suspect was detained, Reuters reports, according to News.ro.

The head of the National Police, Ivan Vîhivski, said that the attacker had disguised in the courier and fired eight times in the Saturday attack that took place in the city of Liov, in the west of the country.

“He spent a lot of time preparing, observing, planning and, finally, pressing the trigger … There is Russian involvement,” he said on Facebook, without providing evidence.

Russia, who has been in war with Ukraine since the beginning of 2022, has made no comment and no one has assumed responsibility for killing Parubi, a 54-year-old politician, an important figure in the protests that contributed to the removal of the Pro-Rus president in 2014.

Vadim Onîşhenko, the regional head of the SBU Information Service, said that everything seems to be a crime. “We have information that indicates the possible involvement of the security services of the Russian Federation in organizing the murder,” he said in a statement published by SBU.

Parubi was president of the Parliament in 2016-2019, after contributing to the leadership of the 2013-2014 protests who led to the departure of the Ukrainian president, the pro-Russian Viktor Yanukovici.

Parrubi was also secretary of the National Council of Security and Defense of Ukraine from February to August 2014, during which time Russia occupied Crimea, and separatists supported by Russia began to fight government forces in eastern Ukraine.

Both countries have accused each other of assassinating or assassinated assassinations during the war, including a high-ranking Russian general in Moscow and a colonel of Ukrainian secret services in Kiev.

The suspect was detained overnight in the Hmelnîţki region, said Interior Minister Ihor Klîmeko.

“The crime was carefully planned: the victim's movements were studied, a route was drawn and a flight plan was designed,” said the Interior Minister on Telegram.

The suspect is a 52 -year -old man, a resident in Liov, according to the General Prosecutor's Office.

Police have published two photos in which they see special forces officers holding a man without a shirt, handcuffed.

According to Ukrainskaia Pravda, the police did not reveal whether the suspect confessed and if the crime weapon was found.

The suspect, born in 1973, had no stable job. The head of the Criminal Police, Andrii Nebitov, said that the man “had some reasons” to commit this crime, but did not specify what they were. He did not comment on the information spread on social networks, according to which “the special Russian services would have blackmailed the suspect with information on the place where his son is, considered disappeared in the war,” writes Ukrainskaia Pravda.

Regarding the place where the citizen of Liov was detained – the Hmelnîţki region -, the head of the Criminal Police said that the investigators do not exclude the possibility that the suspect intended to leave the country illegally. Currently, nothing is known about the accomplices of the suspect, nor about the possible contacts of the suspect with Parubi.

NEBITOV and the head of the security service of Ukraine in Liov, Vadim Onişcenko, said that Parrubi did not request protection neither the police nor SBU.

Parrubi will be buried on September 2 at the Lîceakiv cemetery in Lvot.
