The population of Romania decreased last year, although about 290,000 immigrants entered Romania, the data transmitted on Friday by statistics shows. The negative natural increase (the number of births is smaller than the deaths) and the consistent migration caused the population to decrease by over 31,500 people.

Last year, about 230,000 Romanians emigrated, the equivalent of the population of an average county. About 131,000 were beaten, and 97,000 were women, the data shows

Currently the resident population is 19,036,031 people

In the methodology used by INS, the resident population includes all the persons (Romanian, foreign or citizenship) who have the usual residence in Romania, for a period of at least 12 months.

The female population is slightly majority (51.4%), the statisticians say. The female population on January 1, 2025 was 9.77 million, decreasing by 0.2% compared to the same date of the previous year.

The phenomenon of demographic aging (the number of people over 65 years of age returning to 100 under 15 years) continues to accentuate, rising to 130.0 seniors to 100 young people under 15 years.

The process of demographic aging has deepened, the share of the elder population (65 years and over) continuing its growth trend: compared to January 1, 2024 with 0.3 percentage points (from 20.0% in 2024 to 20.3% to January 1, 2025).

The weight of the population of 0-14 years in total population decreased from 15.9% to January 1, 2024 to 15.6% January 1, 2025. The demographic aging index increased from 125.8 (on January 1, 2024) to 130.0 elderly to 100 young people (on January 1, 2025).

The balance of international migration in 2024P was positive, the number of immigrants exceeding the number of emigrants with 58.8 thousand people. Thus, Romania continued to be an immigration country.

However, the balance of international migration, decreasing from previous years, has failed to compensate for the negative natural increase (-102 thousand people). As a result, on January 1, 2025, the resident population of Romania was declining compared to the same date of the previous year.

During 2024, men were majority among both emigrants (57.6%) and immigrants (58.3%).
