Sloane Stephens (32 years old, 354 WTA), the winner of the US Open in 2017, spoke about the decision to freeze its eggs and how this option will change female tennis and women's sport.
Sloane Stephens is one of the first tennis players to make the decision to freeze their eggs, thinking about its future after the end of the sports career. In an interview for CNN, the former world number 3 talked about its situation.
Sloane Stephens: “This changes the trajectory of how women in sports make decisions for the future”
She explained that the first time she froze her experience was very unpleasant, accumulated 7 kilograms and returned unprepared in the competition, but the second time the experience was completely different.
“If I knew, I would probably have done it when I was 22 and my eggs were good and fluffy and ready for it. It is definitely a difference for young players who can now think about it, at 25, not at 30 or 32. Or even think about 20 and make the decision for up to 28 years, “Stephens said.
“All these years matters. The young player generation will feel much more comfortable to talk about it and do it; they will feel sustained because of [înghețării] the ranking. This really changes the trajectory of how women in sports make decisions for their future, ”added the American.
Stephens was delighted by the fact that he is asked questions about the experience he went through and that there is an increasing openness in this direction, which contributes to more informed decisions.
“Each body reacts differently to different drugs, to different procedures. I really wanted to make sure that the players have the opportunity to go with their own speed, with their own rhythm and that they have the opportunity to decide when they want to return to the field and how much they want to take free.”, Explained the 32 -year -old player.
This spring, WTA announced that for the first time in history, players will benefit from paid maternity leave. According to BBC Sport, the money will be offered by the public investment fund of Saudi Arabia, who is a global WTA circuit partner.
“Every female sport should follow this direction of promoting players, prioritizing the future of players and their right to have families. It is great that tennis is one of the sports that offer this, but there is more to do. That could lead to total circuit change in 20 years”Sloane Stephens concluded.
