British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Tuesday that the UK will recognize the state of Palestine in September if Israel does not take “substantial steps” to put an end to the “terrible situation” in the Gaza strip, informs the German press agency.

“I can confirm that the United Kingdom will recognize the state of Palestine in September, in front of the UN General Assembly, if the Israeli government will not take substantial steps to put an end to the terrible situation in Gaza, it will not reach a cessation of fire, it will not be clear that there will be no annexation of the Cisiorordan, and it will not be a long term, State, ”said Starmer, according to a statement issued by Downing Street following the meeting convened by the prime minister with the main members of his office.

His statements occur in the context in which the British Prime Minister is under a growing pressure to recognize Palestine, against the background of hunger warnings in the Gaza Strip, notes Agerpres.

Speaking from Downing Street, Statmer told reporters that his government “will make an evaluation in September about how much the parties have taken these steps.”

The UK will continue to work with its allies to “put an end to the suffering, flood Gaza with aid and deliver a more stable future for the Middle East”, “because I know this is what the British people desperately want to see,” added the head of the London government.

Last Thursday, French President Emmanuel Macron also announced that Paris will recognize the state of Palestine at the General Assembly of New York in September.

“True to his historical commitment to a fair and sustainable peace in the Middle East, I decided to recognize the state of Palestine. I will make the solemn announcement at the General Assembly of the United Nations next year,” Macron wrote in a message published in the online environment.

France will then co-defend, together with Saudi Arabia, an international conference of the heads of state and government meant to relaunch the so-called “two states”, Palestinian and Israeli.

This conference, initially scheduled for June, was postponed at the last moment because of the war between Israel and Iran.

“The most urgent thing today is to put an end to the war in Gaza and save the civilian population,” the French president said in his message.

Israeli leaders harshly criticized the announcement made by Macron on Thursday. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appreciated that this decision “rewards terror” and is an existential threat, offering a “launching ramp for annihilating” Israel. “Let's be clear: Palestinians do not seek to create a state with Israel, but seek to create a state instead of Israel,” he added.
