They assessed public media in Poland. Worse only in two countries


Polish public media was in the 25th place among 27 European Union countries in terms of independence from political influence – It results from the latest reporter report without borders, whose conclusions are cited by Onet. The situation in Poland gives way only to Malta and Hungary.
The report analyzed, among others The level of pluralism in public media as well as political and economic influences on their functioning. The results are alarming: up to 16 out of 29 experts and representatives of the media world participating in the study decided that pressure on public media in Poland is not only strong, but in some cases even extreme.

“From an economic point of view, their financing – whether through license fees, taxes collected from taxes or subsidies from state budgets – is regularly questioned” – notes the quoted Thibaut Bruttin, secretary general of reporters without borders, in the introduction to the report.
Also emphasizes that Public media in many EU countries become political tools. “They can be easily transformed into government spokesmen, as is the case in Italy, or into propaganda tools, as in Hungary,” he adds.
Public media sick for years
The report leaves no illusions as to the state of public media in Poland. Contrary to earlier promises of the current government, they failed to restore their independence after the changes introduced by Law and Justice.

As the authors of the report indicate, the crisis of trust in public media in Poland is deep. In 2024, only 29 percent Citizens trusted the TVP Info channel. This is one of the lowest results in Europe.
