The American magazine “The New York Times” reports that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron and the Prime Minister of Great Britain Keir Starmer are creating a new partnership in the field of security. It is to have one main goal – strengthen Europe's defense and make it independent of the United States.
“Any opponent threatening the vital interests of Great Britain or France may be confronted with the power of the nuclear forces of two countries,” said states in the declaration, claiming that there is no extreme threat to Europe that would not cause the responses of both nations.
What's more – in May all three leaders went to Ukraine together to show her solidarity.
In search of new roads
Leaders from Paris, Berlin and London are looking for new safety paths for Europe.
“They do not act against the United States or completely independent of them, but they have to make their own decisions and take responsibility for them,” said Lawrence Freedman from King's College London in an interview with The New York Times.
As planned in the future, the headquarters of the “Coalitions of Volunteers” is to be created in Paris, which will support Ukraine in its war against Russia – regardless of the actions of the United States.

– Currently, the main topic of coalition talks is the support of the Ukrainian armed forces. (…) The coalition also wonders how you can stabilize the future suspension of weapons in Ukraine – said spokesman for the French editorial government of the weekly “Bild”.
The fact is that the trust of European leaders in Washington is decreasing – US President Donald Trump has repeatedly talked about withdrawing from the defense alliance. Also his deputy, JD Vance, in a speech at the Munich Safety Conference, criticized Europe sharply, accusing them of, among others for censorship and moving away from democratic values.
An important role of Poland
For this reason, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasizes the reinforcements – according to Berlin's plan by 2029, he is to increase defense expenses, including infrastructure projects, to 5 percent. GDP. What's more, this goal has recently been set by the North Atlantic Alliance – so far it was 2 percent. GDP.
However, this is not enough. Thomas C. Theiner, a military expert, in an interview with the editors of “Bild” stated that Germany, France and Great Britain should include another state – Poland in their alliance.
– It is a front state and the largest buyer of weapons in Europe. Whoever does not include Poles in the alliance, progresses short -sighted and recklessly, “said Theiner. He also pointed out that the Army of Great Britain is now shrinking.
– A strong defense line in Europe must consist of France, Germany and Poland, with Italy, Turkey and Scandinavians on the second line. Poland lacks air force, Germany and France can help in this respect – he said.
He also appealed for Europe to allocate more funds to improve its defense.
