What hides the scandal of emissaries sent to the US by Prime Minister Ciolacu

“It seems that, indeed, we do not have a direct dialogue channel with the Donald Trump administration. This is even if, at level 2-3 the relations between Romania and the US still operate. (…) Romania is a border country with Ukraine, a state in full war, which is why Romania wants a peace in Ukraine to ensure a long-term security architecture. Develop the war economy.explains the geopolitical analyst Răzvan Munteanu for “Adevărul”.

The decision to send some emissaries is not wrong, but such a plan should have come much earlier and set up a mandate for those nominated to intervene outside the borders to support Romania's interests, the analyst explained: “Romania should have started this procedure much faster to open the channels of communication with Washington from November 2024. But unfortunately, the internal political chaos in which we were made to make these procedures delay. (…) Now, it is important to choose these emissaries and we will see in the near future, or if you do not choose a choice. At the moment it is a good decision. ”

Foreign policy analyst Radu Magdin, at the same time emphasizes that discretion would have been needed. “In complicated times, all kinds of solutions are explored. The idea of special emissary, either permanent or ad-hoc, is not a bad idea. The way the appointment, the attributions, the way in which the emissary agrees is communicated or what should not be communicated, this is, in fact, the professionalism of an administration or, unfortunately. (…) Mr. Sprîncean is known for those who look at the United States, as an influential type in the Florida area and Mar-Lago.explained the foreign policy analyst Radu Magdin.

What are the stakes

“Romania, as a member of the EU and having a strategic partnership with the US, is in a somewhat difficult position at the moment. First of all, it is about the annulment of the Romanian elections, which has dissatisfied Washington. It is not necessarily about the prohibition of Călin Georgescu, but rather that Romania has shown that it is weak.”pointed out the geopolitical analyst Răzvan Munteanu.

In addition to the external situation, the electoral aspect also intervenes, the analysts stressing that certain points of view come against the background of the presidential campaign. At the same time, both the positions of the politicians with functions in the state and those of the candidates are trying to cope with the complicated situation from the external level.

“Here is a very big problem for both the politicians in the presidential race, who have to combine both situations with great care, as well as for the political class of Romania. (…) In this context we see politicians who try to combine the two paradigms of foreign policy, speak of a sustainable peace in Ukraine and at the same time, to the same time, to the same time, Soros ”, explained Răzvan Munteanu, referring to the themes used by Donald Trump.

In fact, at the moment the Romanian Embassy in Washington fails to open a communication channel with the Trump administration, against which Ambassador Andrei Muraru had several contrary positions, and the interim president Ilie Bolojan has a capacity for projection of the external political power reduced at the moment, in the present time, he pointed out “The political effects are rather related to the electoral race in Romania. And, of course, from here, they can be different narratives to criticize or defend the prime minister's decision.”

Former President Traian Basescu warned about the possibility of the USA not recognizing the result of the elections, subsequently stating, about sending the emissaries, that Marcel Ciolacu's decision usurped the duties of interim president Ilie Bolojan.

Foreign policy analyst Radu Magdin explained in the context that the former head of state, “Although he is right with many of the things he says, he sometimes overcome other aspects. ”

Scandal around the “emissaries” sent by Ciolacu

The prime minister said at the beginning of the month that he sent two emissaries to the US, one of whom already established across the ocean. Later came with clarifications, stating that, in fact, “There will be hundreds of emissaries” And that he wants the current candidate supported by the coalition in the presidential elections, Crin Antonescu to “Turn this into a phenomenon“.You know the American policy in which I make certain meetings, Party, but with Ştaif, where certain amounts are gathered for the social area ”.

The positions of one of the “emissaries” sent by the prime minister also brought a series of attacks on the executive management, being requested even the prime minister's resignation and stopping the presidential campaign. Dragoș Sprînceană, a businessman established in the US for over 20 years and one of the characters he confirmed that Marcel Ciolacu spoke, said the US should “To ignore the messages of Romania, Pro-Ukraine and Pro-France, because we have an interim president that will not count in a month or a month. ”

The candidates enrolled in the presidential elections, the president of the USR, Elena Lasconi, and the mayor of the capital Nicușor Dan asked the prime minister of clarifications regarding the statements made by Dragoș Sprînceană.

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu replied that “The opinions expressed in the public space by various Romanian citizens who have no official quality are purely personal and do not involve a position of the Romanian state. The official positions of Romania are always transmitted through institutional channels, in close connection with the Presidency and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The priorities of the Romanian foreign policy are therefore unchanged. ”
