The fire broke out on Sunday, around noon, aboard the KM Barcelona 5 ferry, which was heading for Manado, the capital of the province of Northern Sulawesi. Indonesian authorities have announced that they have saved over 560 people and recovered three bodies, according to CNN and Euronews.
A coastal guard ship, six rescue ships and several inflatable boats have been mobilized in the rescue operation of the ferry passengers. The crews removed many people from the sea and took them to the nearby islands, and the local fishermen also saved some survivors who wore rescue vests, while they were floating in the agitated waters.
On the list of ferry passengers with a capacity of 600 people were initially registered only 280 passengers and 15 crew members. However, the National Rescue Agency confirmed, that 568 people were rescued from the ferry, while three corpses, including that of a pregnant woman, were recovered by rescuers.
According to the head of the Naval Base in Manado, Admiral Franky Pasuna Sihombing, in Indonesia it is accustomed that the number of passengers on a boat or a ferry differs from the one recorded in the list of passengers. This discrepancy can contribute to accidents and can complicate search and rescue efforts, he said.
The images on the social networks after the incident show the ferry in flames and the passengers who managed to save and jump in the water, wearing rescue news.
