The largest AI companies block functions during the Gaokao exams

Tencent, Bytedance and Mionot Ai applications have blocked, among others Recognition of photos and functions of answering in real time. All this so that students do not use chatbots to download during the exams.
Already in May, the Chinese Ministry of Education warned students against the use of content generated by AI in homework and tests, despite the fact that it at the same time promotes the teaching of artificial intelligence from primary school.
About 13 million 400 thousand took part in this year's “Gaokao”, which lasted four days. students.
Unlike the American system, which takes into account essays, additional classes and other exams, in China everything is based almost exclusively on one test. For many students from provinces or poorer families is the only chance for social promotion.
This pressure led to a kind of arms race in preparations, from private tutoring to additional schools. But This year, AI was excluded from the game.

Chinese chatbots fell silent
Screenshots published by Rednote application users show that popular chatbots, such as Yuanbao from Tencent, Douba from Bytedance and Kimi from Mionot AI, turned off the functions useful during examination hours during testing.
In one of the entries, the user with the nickname “DKK” tried during the exams to send a photo of the exam sheet to Doubao. Chatbot rejected the test: “The content of the photo does not meet the requirements, unsuccessful sending.”
In another screenshot, another user asked Douba for help in the question. Chatbot responded with the message: “We are very sorry. For the sake of the honesty of entrance exams to study, the function of questions and answers Doubo is temporarily disabled and will return at 18:45 after the exams. Thank you for understanding and support. We wish everyone successful at the exam!”
Yuanbao from Tencent sent a similar message, also on Monday: “Dear users, to ensure the integrity of entrance exams to studies, this function will be unavailable during their duration. TENCENT YUanbao wishes to all successful successes at the exam!”
Yuanbao allows you to choose between your own Hunyuan and R1 from Deepseek. Both are integrated with the huge Tencent ecosystem, including Wechat, the largest social application in China, which is used by almost 1.4 billion people.
Chatbot kimi from moonshot ai also blocked photos of photo recognition and answering questions. In one of the Sunday entries at Rednote, the student tried to send a photo of the task and ask for help. He received a standard response about the suspension of the function due to the exams.
When he replied: “I'm not a candidate, and this question does not come from the exam,” Chatbot did not change his mind.
Tencent, Bytedance and Mionot AI did not respond to Business Insider's request for comment.
China wants students to learn AI but not cheat
China invest huge funds in the development of AI education.
In the capital of the country, Beijing, learning artificial intelligence is mandatory, even for primary school students. From this school year, each school must provide at least eight hours of AI classes annually.
Although the country seeks to develop a generation with new technologies, regulators set clear boundaries: AI is to study, not cheat.
The decision of technology companies to temporarily block the AI function during “Gaokao” only confirmed this message: artificial intelligence has no access to the exam room.
