NCBR director prof. Jerzy Małachowski dismissed the president of Ideas NCBR, dr. Grzegorz Borowik – confirmed the NCBR press office on Wednesday PAP. By decision of the supervisory board, the company is now managed by dr Małgorzata Ciechomska.
Information about the dismissal of Borowik, after eight months of performing functions, appeared on Wednesday in some media, she gave it, among others Wyborcza.biz and the website mamstartup.pl.
PAP confirmed these reports at the National Center for Research and Development. According to the Centrum Press Office, “Cadre decisions are to guarantee an efficient and professional merger of Ideas NCBR with Akłat NCBR.”
Grzegorz Borowik won a competition announced in July 2024 for the president of the IDEAS NCBR research and development center and in September last year. He took the position. This aroused numerous controversy, because his only opponent in the competition was prof. Piotr Sankowski, originator and creator of IDEAS NCBR. Sankowski was the president of this center from its establishment in 2021 to June 2024, when his term of office passed.
At the end of September 2024, Sankowski announced that he would soon finish his work at Ideas NCBR as a leader of the research group. In response to this information from sitting on the Company's Scientific Council, several members gave up, and the departure from the Institute considered several research group leaders. The reasons for changing the position of President Ideas NCBR in open letters to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Science were asked by the winners of the ERC grants and scientists dealing with artificial intelligence in Poland.
After the protests of the scientific community, the ministry of digitization, science and higher education decided to establish an IDEAS Research Institute and announced that Sankowski would lead him. The ministers decided that Ideas NCBR will continue to operate, but it will implement research results, and its scientific and didactic mission will be taken over by a new institution.
On February 25, 2025, the Council of Ministers adopted a regulation on the establishment of the IDEAS Research Institute, which is to connect two areas: military and civil. It is jointly managed by the Ministry of Digitization (MC) and the Ministry of National Defense (Ministry of National Defense), and is managed by prof. Piotr Sankowski. This is to be a unique center of artificial intelligence research on a European scale.
NCBR director prof. Małachowski assured at the time that regardless of the Government's decision, Ideas NCBR is still working, but it is considering the combination of the company's activities in the commercialization of research results on artificial intelligence with the activities of Akłości NCBR.
