An action of sabotage on the high voltage network that feeds the city of Cannes caused concern among the organizers of the Film Festival, on Saturday, May 24, even on the evening of the closing festivity.
Three of the four pillars of an electricity pillar in Villeneuve-Laubit, a locality located in southeast of France, were sectioned, the regional prosecutor said on Saturday, qualifying as an “malicious act,” Agerpres notes.
As a result of the network intervention, the RTE operator was forced to stop the power supply, which led to a major current in Cannes, about 20 kilometers away.
The current has affected about 160,000 homes. However, the festival palace, the place of the event in the 78th edition, was not affected, as it benefits from its own energy supply system.
Authorities in the Alpes-Maritimes department announced on Saturday afternoon that the power supply will be resumed gradually.
