US Secretary of State Marco Rubio insisted on a Senate hearing on Tuesday that President Donald Trump did not make any concession to Russia, thus rejecting the criticism of the policy carried out by the Washington Administration on the Ukraine war, AFP reports.

“He did not obtain any concession,” Rubio said, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Rubio made these statements in an answer to an interpellation addressed by Senator Jeanne Shaheen, the leader of the Democrats of the Commission for Foreign Relations of the American Senate.

The senator responded, saying that since his return to the White House, Trump has given him a few reasons to capture Ukrainian territories, while the Kremlin leader is gaining time.

Due to the support given to Russia by China and “because President Trump has given up our lever of influence, Putin does not feel pressed to accept an armistice in Ukraine,” she said.

Rubio said that Trump, who discussed Putin on Monday, does not want to impose new sanctions against Russia – a measure taken by the European Union on Tuesday.

“If it is really clear that the Russians are not interested in a peace agreement and they just want to continue the war-it may very well come to this point,” Rubio said, referring to the possibility of imposing new sanctions against Moscow.

Trump “believes that, at this moment, if you start threatening with sanctions, the Russians will stop negotiations, and for us it is important to talk to them and determine them to sit at the negotiation table,” added the head of American Diplomacy.
