The appreciated actor Sean Penn states that the American film industry no longer produces stars in the true sense of the word and appoints Jennifer Lawrence as “probably the latest movie star,” reports Variety magazine.
Penn made the comment during an interview with the Louis Theroux Podcast, at a time when he was talking to a series of celebrities. Penn, a double winner of the Oscar award thanks to the movies Mystic River (2003) and Milk (2008), expressed his opinion about each one.
“I think the product factory has stopped at Jennifer Lawrence's period or something,” Penn said about the movie star status. “She is probably the latest movie star,” he said about the actress now 34 years old.
Another undeniable cinema star, in Penn's vision, is Tom Cruise, who returns to the cinemas next Friday with the movie Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.
Sean Penn says na saw no movie of one of the most appreciated young actors
Penn, 64, described his colleague two years younger as “a guy who follows excellence at a very high level.” “Some types of films are more appreciated than others … but he is a very good actor and, at the same time, an incredible craft,” Penn stressed.
Both he and Jennifer Lawrence will participate this year at the Cannes Film Festival with new movies. Cruise comes with the latest movie Mission impossiblepresented as his last appearance in the role of Ethan Hunt, and Lawrence collaborates with the director Lynne Ramsay and actor Robert Pattinson in the psychological drama Die my love.

Later in the interview, Penn noted: “I sometimes see interpretations of young actors who make me think that I should leave and make myself an accountant, because they are so good,” and TheRoux was curious to find out who he refers to. Maybe at Timothée Chalaamet, considered the most popular Hollywood actor?
“I haven't seen that movie yet,” said Penn, referring to Chalaamet's nominated Oscar interpretation in the role of Bob Dylan in the movie To complete the Unknown from last year. Penn added: “I didn't see any of his films.”
Are there any real cinema stars? What Harrison Ford said
Whether or not there are cinema stars in Hollywood is a continuous debate topic between professionals in the film industry.
Some top directors, such as Quentin Tarantino, have argued that the ascension of superhero films has contributed to the death of the concept of cinema, as actors like Chris Evans are associated with their characters than with the status of star.
“Even though in the 80s I saw more films than ever, I think then-as in the ʼ50-it was the worst period in Hollywood history. Equipped only by the present period!” Tarantino said in a 2022 interview in which he said that the new superhero movies are so bad that they can be directed by anyone.
But other big names in Hollywood, such as Harrison Ford, do not agree with this evaluation. Asked last year by GQ magazine about the disappearance of Hollywood stars, Ford replied: “Ah, I think it's stupid.”
“I do not think the question is whether there are still cinema stars or not. Every day wonderful actors appear,” Ford said.
“If the movies will need celebrities, they will find them. Damn, I never understand what it means to be a movie star. I'm an actor. I tell stories. I'm part of a group of people who collaborate. I am a story-story storyteller.” This is me, “stressed the legendary actor.
