Germany and Ukraine Test New Unmanned Combat Vehicle for Armed Forces

The German company ARX Robotics and Ukrainian manufacturer ROBONEERS have successfully tested a new unmanned ground vehicle intended for use by the Ukrainian armed forces. The initial systems are projected to be integrated and delivered by the end of 2026, depending on the needs of the Ukrainian military.
The cooperation agreement between the two companies was signed earlier this month during a visit by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to Kyiv, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as reported by Euronews.
How the Combat Robot Operates
The system, named GEREON, has been developed by ARX Robotics. This unmanned vehicle is capable of performing reconnaissance missions utilizing onboard cameras and sensors.
It can be fitted with the SABER armament module, produced by ROBONEERS, which is mounted on the vehicle’s upper part and provides remote fire support for both attack and defense missions.
According to both companies, this system allows military personnel to operate it from a safer distance, thus reducing their exposure to frontline dangers.
Unarmed versions of the GEREON system are currently being used in Ukraine for various missions, including transporting supplies, evacuating wounded soldiers, supporting electronic warfare operations, conducting reconnaissance, and countering drones. The platform is also adaptable for combat missions.
The aim is to develop a versatile robotic system that can be quickly configured for different types of frontline missions.
The SABER armament module can be customized, allowing troops to mount various types of weapons depending on the mission, ranging from assault rifles to grenade launchers.
ARX Robotics asserts that GEREON currently represents the largest fleet of Western-manufactured unmanned ground vehicles operational in Ukraine.
“Modern ground forces require combat platforms that can be rapidly adapted to various missions, integrate new technologies, and work seamlessly with existing systems,” stated Maximilian Wied, financial director and co-founder of ARX Robotics.
ROBONEERS claims that its robotic systems have already been used in over 15,000 missions on the frontline since 2014.
The two companies are collaborating in other areas as well. They have established a joint venture to expand production in Germany and Ukraine of another unmanned ground vehicle, Rys Pro, aiming to produce over 1,000 units in the first year.
German Defense Minister Visits Military Technology Company
Advancements in military technologies utilizing artificial intelligence are also on the agenda of German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, who is visiting the headquarters of the company Helsing in Munich.
The visit program includes showcasing the latest AI products and capabilities of the company, as well as meetings with management, employees, and representatives of the employees’ council.
Founded in 2021, Helsing has rapidly developed into one of the key European defense technology companies.
The company develops AI solutions and software for military systems, including technologies that enable the integration of AI capabilities into existing platforms such as tanks, submarines, and fighter jets.
