Pope Leon No Longer Requires Treatment After Lung Cancer Surgery

Pope Leon will not require additional treatment after undergoing surgery for lung cancer last week, according to a statement released by his doctors on Wednesday from the Vatican.

Chief surgeon Stefano Margaritora and personal physician Luigi Carbone stated, “Subsequent oncological assessment confirmed that no additional treatment is necessary,” as reported by Reuters.

Pope Leon Undergoes Lung Cancer Surgery

Pope Leon was diagnosed with pulmonary adenocarcinoma, which is the most common type of lung cancer.

Earlier this week, the Vatican announced that during the procedure, “the lower lobe of the right lung was removed.” The surgery was successful with no complications reported.

Doctors have approved Pope Leon XIV’s discharge from the hospital on Saturday.

He addressed the crowd gathered in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican for the first time since his surgery on Sunday.

With a smile and a clear, confident voice, Pope Leon thanked those who prayed for him in recent days and stated that he would gradually resume his commitments during his recovery.

“I want to thank everyone who has prayed for me in recent days. I truly felt your support – thank you,” the pontiff said at the end of the Angelus prayer.

He expressed particular gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and all staff at Gemelli Hospital, addressing the thousands of people present.
