Bernadette Szocs and Eduard Ionescu Secure Bronze at European Championships in Ljubljana

The Romanian pair of Bernadette Szocs and Eduard Ionescu suffered a defeat in the semifinals of the mixed doubles event at the European Championships in Ljubljana, losing 3-0 (11-8, 11-4, 12-10) to Germany’s Benedikt Duda and Nina Mittelham. Despite the loss, they secured the bronze medal, marking their first medal together.
Szocs returned to the table on October 15 after previously qualifying for the semifinals of the women’s doubles alongside Elizabeta Samara. She and Ionescu aimed to reach the final in the mixed doubles category, having already guaranteed a bronze medal following a narrow victory over the French duo of Thibault Poret and Prithika Pavade, winning 3-2 (9-11, 13-11, 12-10, 6-11, 11-9) the day before.
The match against the German duo proved challenging. The competitors maintained a close score at the beginning, with Ionescu and Szocs trailing 3-2. Duda and Mittelham quickly pulled ahead to 6-2, establishing a strong lead in the first set.
Despite a commendable effort from the Romanians, who rallied from 5-8 to 8-8, they ultimately lost the first set as the Germans secured three consecutive points to finish it at 11-8.
Feeling slightly discouraged, Szocs and Ionescu struggled in the second set, which they lost decisively at 11-4. However, they fought back with renewed determination in the third set, which was the most competitive of the match. At 10-7 in favor of Duda and Mittelham, the Romanian pair mounted a comeback, flipping the momentum to gain a set point at 11-10.
Mixed Doubles Semifinal Defeat for Szocs and Ionescu
The tension remained high as the score reached 11-11 and then 12-12, but ultimately, the German pair clinched the final two points to secure their place in the championship match.
After the match, Szocs and Ionescu embraced, having achieved their first European medal together. Szocs, aged 31, has already accumulated three European medals: one silver (2022) and two bronzes (2012, 2016). In total, she has garnered 14 European medals since 2012, including three golds, eight silvers, and three bronzes.
For Ionescu, 21, this marks his second continental medal, having won silver with the Romanian team last year in Zadar.
Other Romanian competitors still have matches scheduled for the day, particularly in the third round of singles competitions for both men and women. Szocs is set to play another match following her doubles events.
