Raul Rusescu Critiques Reghecampf’s Team Strategy After FCSB’s Win

Raul Rusescu, a 38-year-old former footballer and three-time Romanian champion, recently analyzed FCSB’s narrow victory of 1-0 against Oțelul, marking the start of Laurențiu Reghecampf’s third tenure as head coach. Rusescu, who played under Reghecampf, expressed concerns regarding the team’s performance after they took the lead.
During a segment on GSP Live, Rusescu highlighted a significant issue with how the team played after scoring their first goal, suggesting they fell into a reactive style that allowed Oțelul to dictate the pace of the game. “After going 1-0 up, FCSB should not have let Oțelul control the rhythm, especially at home. This is a continuation of a poor start to the season, which has been modest at best,” he noted.
Disappointment in Team’s Tactics Post-Goal
Rusescu pointed out that FCSB had numerous shots on goal but struggled to convert opportunities. He emphasized that the team must avoid becoming complacent after taking the lead. “It’s concerning that this keeps happening; they shouldn’t take such risks,” he added.
Concerns Over Arnold Garita’s Role
As he assessed the team’s central forward options, Rusescu raised doubts about Arnold Garita fitting Reghecampf’s tactical vision. He stated that Garita lacks the profile required for the pressing style that Reghecampf aims to implement, which emphasizes recovering the ball closer to the opponent’s goal and executing rapid transitions.
“Garita may excel in pressing, but when the game tightens, he needs to operate in small spaces, which isn’t his forte. Players like Stoian and Drăguș are more suited for this as they can capitalize on tight situations and finish effectively,” Rusescu commented.
He believes that with the right operational dynamics, including pressing high up the pitch, FCSB could maximize their attacking players’ strengths, especially if they maintain close support from midfield. “To elevate the game, the team must recover the ball higher up and trust their central defenders to win duels,” he explained.
“When pressing as a unit, you need confidence in your defenders to win battles, and midfielders must be capable of covering spaces. If you regain possession, key players can then make impactful plays. In my time, we maintained a solid front by moving upfield together, and that was crucial in employing my skills effectively,” Rusescu reflected during the show.
