Uncertain Future for TVN Following Warner Bros. Discovery Merger

Concerns are emerging among employees at TVN regarding potential plans for the Polish broadcaster’s sale following its acquisition by Warner Bros. Discovery, according to Wirtualne Media. Experts believe this possibility is significant, as TVN may not be a “key element” for the American conglomerate.

Following the completion of the $110 billion merger between Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Skydance, speculation about the future of TVN has intensified. Rumors about possible changes, cost-cutting measures, and layoffs are circulating. According to Wirtualne Media, there are also discussions about a potential sale of the broadcaster.

One TVN employee remarked, “There are voices within the company suggesting that the Americans want to sell us. I suspect the government will not allow such a sale before next year’s parliamentary elections.”

Experts Weigh in on Potential Sale of TVN

Experts have provided their insights on the potential sale of TVN. Dr. Mirosław Filiciak, a professor at SWPS University, indicated that selling TVN aligns with the global strategy of the conglomerate. “TVN may not be a crucial component for the company’s operations—even if we perceive it otherwise in Poland,” he stated to Wirtualne Media. He added that selling TVN could help the conglomerate reduce part of its debt.

Bartosz Węglarczyk, the editor-in-chief of Onet, also considers the sale of TVN to be “highly probable.” He explained, “Skydance did not acquire Warner Bros. Discovery for its foreign assets but for its American assets. Foreign assets are not significant to them, so they may decide to sell TVN.”

Jakub Bierzyński, CEO of Omnicom Media Group, shares a similar view but emphasizes TVN’s profitability and established position, which could argue for its retention in the group’s portfolio.

Conversely, Zbigniew Benbenek, founder of ZPR Media Group, believes a sale is unlikely. He argues that TVN is a “highly profitable company that provides earnings to pay off debts.” He anticipates significant investments in Poland, citing the country’s emergence as a production hub.

The coming months will be crucial for the future of the Polish station. David Ellison, head of the new media giant, stated in his first address to employees post-merger, “The merger of two companies of this size and complexity will require difficult decisions. Changes and their consequences await us; I will not pretend otherwise. However, I can promise that we will make these decisions as swiftly and thoughtfully as possible.”
