Ukraine Seeks Global Supplies of Ammunition for F-16s

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently discussed the ongoing war against Russia with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, emphasizing the urgent need to enhance Ukraine’s air defense capabilities. “Strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses is literally vital. We need additional resources for maintenance, spare parts, and ammunition for our fleet of F-16s. I promised that the Netherlands would assist,” Rutte stated.

In an evening address on October 5, Zelensky expressed gratitude to Rutte for his constructive and prompt support. He noted, “We are currently sourcing ammunition for F-16s worldwide—one of the strongest tools available today for countering the Shahed drones. Packages are already on the way, with more to come, ensuring our aircraft can effectively protect our cities.”

Contextualizing the situation, The Wall Street Journal reported on September 29 that prolonged maintenance delays have rendered a portion of Ukraine’s F-16 fleet inoperable, raising concerns about the vulnerability of Ukraine’s air defense. The F-16s are recognized as the best counter to the reactive drones that Russia frequently deploys against Ukraine. Zelensky later confirmed that approximately half of Ukraine’s F-16 fleet is currently undergoing maintenance in Europe.

On October 1, Zelensky announced that Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense and the presidential office would review agreements with partners regarding the necessary ammunition for the F-16 fighter jets.
