Pharmaceutical Giant Overtakes Lidl’s Dieter Schwarz as Germany’s Richest

A significant shift has occurred in the ranking of Germany’s richest individuals. Despite an increase in his wealth by €7 billion, Dieter Schwarz, the former leader, has been surpassed by a prominent family in the pharmaceutical sector.
According to “Manager Magazin,” Dieter Schwarz is no longer at the top of the list of the richest Germans for 2026. His wealth now stands at approximately €53.7 billion, as he drops to second place. This change positions the Boehringer Ingelheim family, with an estimated fortune exceeding €66 billion, at the forefront of the ranking.
The Boehringer family, which has maintained ownership of their company since its establishment in 1885, specializes in the development of pharmaceuticals for both human and veterinary medicine.
In third place are the Albrecht and Heister families, owners of the Aldi Süd supermarket chain.
Who Owns Lidl?
The Schwarz Group, which includes Lidl and Kaufland supermarkets, also encompasses waste management company PreZero and IT service provider Schwarz Digits. According to “Manager Magazin,” Schwarz remains the wealthiest entrepreneur in the Heilbronn-Franken region, followed by the Würth family of Künzelsau, with an estimated wealth of nearly €15 billion.
