Zelensky Accuses Putin of Provoking Escalation with Attacks on Ukrainian Infrastructure

Zelensky accuses Putin of deliberately provoking a response from Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has voiced his outrage over recent Russian attacks targeting Ukrainian bridges and data centers. He claims that Russian President Vladimir Putin is intentionally provoking Ukraine into retaliation to escalate the conflict.

Zelensky stated, “I think, to be honest, that he [Putin] has decided that by striking at the internet, data centers, and mobile communications, knowing my principles, he understands that we will respond. It’s just a matter of time.”

He also suggested that Putin might desire a situation where Russians lack access to the internet, saying, “I think he hopes that he won’t have internet, honestly, because he wants… He is already like a fish. He wants to be in an aquarium completely, so that people won’t have internet.”

Despite the ongoing attacks, Zelensky assured that Ukraine has its own plans and operations aimed at destroying the military logistics of its adversary, including supply routes for weapons and drone hubs. He emphasized that Ukraine will find a way to cope, even if Russian strikes lead to the destruction of Ukrainian bridges.

“If our bridges fall, we will find a way out of this situation, but his people will also feel it,” he added, warning of the consequences of such escalation impacting both nations.

Zelensky believes that Putin’s actions aim to intensify the conflict, suggesting that it is partly because he does not feel enough international pressure. He pointed out that the United States should increase its pressure on Russia, as Putin fears American leader Donald Trump.

Context

  • Since October 1, Russia has repeatedly targeted bridges in Kyiv, including at least four strikes on the Southern Bridge and subsequently the Northern Bridge.
  • The New York Times reported on October 3 that bridges have become a new target in the Russian offensive campaign, noting that even without complete destruction, these attacks could lead to prolonged closures, creating a logistical nightmare for the capital and the whole of Ukraine. In light of the bombings in Kyiv, plans are underway to build backup crossings over the Dnipro River.
