Adrian Porumboiu Responds to Radu Drăgușin’s Red Card in Poland-Romania Match

Adrian Porumboiu, a former international referee, spoke out during a GSP Live Special broadcast regarding the red card issued to Radu Drăgușin during the Poland-Romania match. The incident occurred in the 22nd minute when Drăgușin failed to position himself correctly against a long ball from the Polish team, leading to a foul on Robert Lewandowski as the last defender. Despite strong protests from Gică Hagi, the referee, Urs Schnyder, issued a direct red card.
Lewandowski converted the subsequent penalty kick, adding to Romania’s challenges in the match.
Porumboiu Agrees with the Red Card Decision
Porumboiu expressed his disappointment at Drăgușin’s mistake, stating, “The error is unforgivable. Drăgușin pushes the opponent while being the last defender. There is no dispute about the decision; it is correct! A penalty and a red card. Regardless of how we analyze the intensity, you can’t dismiss the foul as something trivial.”
He noted that Drăgușin had ample time to position himself better and described the situation as an imprudence. “It’s hard to justify such a mistake given his experience. The regulations are clear, and I regret it, but feeling sorry doesn’t change the game’s rules,” Porumboiu added.
He dismissed claims that the decision favored Poland, pointing out that Lewandowski’s yellow card could have been a red with a little more intensity. “I don’t see any other incident that disadvantaged us,” he remarked.
Overall, Porumboiu commended Romania’s performance, stating they played surprisingly well and created multiple scoring opportunities, which could have led to goals with a bit of luck. “It’s frustrating, but the rules are the rules,” he concluded during the broadcast.
