Thomas Tuchel Addresses Manchester City Scandal and Player Selection

England’s head coach, Thomas Tuchel, has stated he would “never exclude” players from lower leagues should Manchester City face relegation due to financial rule violations. This remark comes in light of recent findings by an independent commission that determined Manchester City had breached financial regulations from the 2009-2010 to 2017-2018 seasons.

Despite denying any wrongdoing, Manchester City is contesting the commission’s conclusion, claiming it contains “clear material errors of law, principle, and fact,” with sanctions yet to be determined. Possible penalties include exclusion from the league, points deductions, and financial fines.

Tuchel Comments on Manchester City’s Situation

Tuchel acknowledged that the situation surrounding Manchester City has been a significant topic among the England national team’s discussions. “Is Manchester City going to be relegated? It’s a major subject that everyone talks about, so there’s no need for me to add my opinion. I’m glad I’m not that voice; no one needs my partial insights on the matter,” he said.

He continued, noting that players are aware and discussing the situation, particularly those from Manchester City, but emphasized their focus on upcoming matches. “They are ready to play tomorrow, showing their commitment on the field and in training. However, it’s clearly a hot topic within the camp,” Tuchel added.

In a press conference prior to the away match against Croatia in the Nations League, Tuchel addressed the possibility of selecting players from lower divisions: “There is always a chance. I will always aim to choose the best squad for training, for the specific match, or for the tournament. I will never exclude someone just because they play in a lower league. We must evaluate each situation individually,” he stated.

Currently, all 24 players in the squad are competing in top-tier leagues, including Elliot Anderson and Marc Guehi from Manchester City, alongside Nico O’Reilly, who was excluded from the squad due to injury.

Although selecting players from lower leagues is unusual, there are precedents. James Trafford was called up by Tuchel in March and June 2025 while playing in the Championship for Burnley, and Sam Johnstone was the last English international to represent the national team while in the Championship at West Brom in 2021. Additionally, Kalvin Phillips made his senior debut before playing a minute in the Premier League while at Leeds.
