Fire at the ‘Taneko’ oil refinery in Russia
Ukrainian military forces have confirmed strikes on two oil refineries in Russia, including the “Taneko” facility in Nizhnekamsk, Tatarstan, where a reservoir caught fire. In addition, the military targeted a storage and launch site for Russian strike drones in Millerovo, Rostov region.
The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces also provided updated details on a strike against the Saratov refinery on September 11, revealing damage to a primary oil processing unit and a section of the main pipeline.
Officials stated that operations against key military targets of the adversary are ongoing.
Background
- Since the beginning of 2024, Ukraine has actively attacked oil and gas facilities within the territory of the aggressor state, Russia. President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that Ukraine has no choice but to respond to Russian airstrikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
- On August 3, Bloomberg reported that Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries forced a reduction in oil processing volumes by approximately 20%, the lowest levels since May 2002.
