German Chancellor Merz Doubts Ban on AfD Would Solve Issues

Chancellor Friedrich Merz of Germany expressed his skepticism regarding the effectiveness of a potential ban on the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, following their recent electoral success in Saxony-Anhalt.

During a press conference in Berlin on Wednesday, he stated, “I remain skeptical that such banning procedures can be successful,” according to Reuters.

The AfD secured over twice the votes of Merz’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in the Saxony-Anhalt elections, where the CDU has held power since 2002. This marked Merz’s first confrontation with the far-right party in the Bundestag.

Merz further commented, “I do not believe that banning this party would resolve the problem,” addressing the AfD’s platform focused on anti-migration and restoring relations with Russia.

He stressed that the main priority in dealing with AfD should be political confrontation and efforts to draw their voters back to the political center.

Merz accused the AfD of threatening Germany’s prosperity with its hostile stance towards the European Union. “Anyone who questions Germany’s membership in the EU, who wants to leave the EU, the eurozone, and the Schengen area, jeopardizes a significant part of our country’s prosperity,” he added.

“You Will Not Gain a Majority Anywhere”

In a parliamentary debate on Wednesday, Merz charged that the AfD desires to establish “ethnic cleansing in Germany,” as reported by The Guardian.

He declared, “You will not gain a majority anywhere in Germany. You are and remain a destructive force,” reinforcing his position against the party.

Prior to Merz’s speech, AfD co-leader Alice Weidel had criticized the CDU, stating they were “pulverized” in Saxony-Anhalt and urged the current Chancellor to step back.
