Polish Special Forces Train in Germany Using Lessons from Ukraine War

Polish Special Forces conducting training in Germany

Since the end of last week, a training program is underway in Germany, developed by U.S. Army Green Berets specifically for American special operations. This program incorporates lessons learned from the ongoing war in Ukraine, according to an American officer.

The training scenario involves Polish units stealthily moving past U.S. airborne infantry units that act as the opposing force. Notably, most local residents are unaware of the exercises, providing a valuable test of how effectively the special forces can blend in with civilian populations.

Such maneuvers are expected to be conducted multiple times a year, with another participant noting that nearly all of the 32 NATO countries are likely to seek similar training opportunities.

Special emphasis is placed on the use of drones, a capability that has significantly advanced due to Ukraine’s prolonged struggle against Russian forces over the past four and a half years.

Context

  • In recent years, European political and military leaders have repeatedly expressed concerns about the threat of a Russian attack. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has warned that Russia could attack NATO as soon as 2029.
  • On August 6, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing U.S. intelligence and official sources, that illegitimate Russian President Vladimir Putin is considering a limited attack on a NATO country before the end of the war in Ukraine, potentially this fall.
  • According to The Wall Street Journal, CIA Director John Ratcliffe secretly visited Moscow on August 25 to warn the Kremlin against any attacks on NATO countries.
