Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed that 38 people lost their lives following a Russian drone attack on an ammunition depot in the village of Myla, located in the Bucha district of Kyiv Oblast. Zelensky emphasized that such storage places should not have existed in that area and stated that an investigation into the circumstances is ongoing.
“All details must be clarified and will be. I expect law enforcement to provide the public with the relevant information. […] Tomorrow is an important day. A report should be presented,” he asserted.
He further stressed the urgency of implementing government and local authority decisions to assist the affected citizens of Bucha.
Earlier in the day, Zelensky reported an increase in fatalities in Kyiv, with 38 confirmed dead and an additional four individuals classified as missing.
Background
- On the evening of August 28, the Russian military struck an ammunition depot in Myla, causing significant detonations, as reported by Zelensky. Approximately 400 individuals were evacuated from the area, and around 130 houses sustained damage across several streets. Law enforcement has initiated a criminal case regarding negligence.
- Svetlana Vodolaga, spokesperson for Ukraine’s State Emergency Service, stated in a comment to Hromadske that most of the casualties were residents of a retirement home.
- Residents of Myla expressed surprise during an interview with Radio Svoboda, claiming they had no knowledge of the ammunition storage near their homes. They believed the site was just a regular bottled water facility, with an ice cream factory nearby.
