Filipe Coelho, the head coach of Universitatea Craiova, has faced significant criticism following the team’s eliminations from both the UEFA Champions League and the Europa League playoffs. Despite the mounting pressure, club president Mihai Rotaru has opted to retain Coelho, who led the team to three trophies in previous seasons.
This season began poorly for Romania’s champions, with an early exit at the hands of Levski Sofia in the Champions League qualifiers, followed by a heartbreaking loss to Ararat Armenia in the Europa League playoffs, where they fell 0-1 after a first-leg draw.
Notable figures in Romanian football, including Gică Craioveanu, have publicly criticized Coelho, questioning his tactical decisions against what they deemed a weaker opponent. “Ararat-Armenia is very modest… I don’t understand why he continued with three central defenders when they posed no real threat,” Craioveanu remarked, emphasizing a lack of courage in key matches.

The atmosphere within the club’s management is one of disappointment, especially given that the team was eliminated by a less formidable rival. Although discussions about Coelho’s potential dismissal have emerged, sources indicate that his position is not as precarious as it may seem.
According to reports, the club leadership, led by Rotaru, is deeply affected by the recent defeat but does not plan to make immediate changes. “In moments of frustration, people can say and do many things. It’s a sad evening for Universitatea Craiova, but we won’t make decisions in haste. We will reflect on our next steps,” a close associate of the club stated.
Edward Iordănescu Emerges as a Potential Replacement
Should Rotaru and the club’s shareholders decide to part ways with Coelho, Edward Iordănescu is the primary candidate for the managerial role. The 48-year-old is currently without a contract and has recently attracted interest from Levadiakos and CFR Cluj.
“We played well, created chances, and did not allow them opportunities. We were not efficient. I won’t say whether it was fair or not, but we were the better team. The most important thing in football is scoring goals, and they managed to do that. Now, we must focus on recovering our players and preparing for the league matches ahead. It’s a tough day, but we must endure together and continue to work hard,” Coelho stated following the defeat in Armenia.
