More than 50 Ukrainian tourists are currently missing following a severe flood that affected Nepal. According to reports, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) is investigating the situation concerning two Ukrainians in the impacted area. Early this morning, the MFA received a report about the loss of contact with a group of tourists comprising 46 Ukrainian citizens in the disaster zone.
As of now, the Nepal Tourism Police has confirmed that 53 Ukrainian citizens are considered missing due to the disaster.
The honorary consul of Ukraine in Nepal is on the ground to assist in the situation. The MFA, along with the consular service department and the Ukrainian embassy in India and China, is actively working to gather additional information and coordinate with foreign agencies to locate the missing Ukrainians, provide updates, and support their families.
Overall, at least 391 foreigners have been unable to establish contact in the region, including citizens from India, the United States, and the United Kingdom, as reported by Reuters.
Recent data from local authorities indicates that the flood has resulted in the deaths of 157 individuals in Nepal, with three fatalities reported in Tibet. Roads, bridges, and homes have been severely damaged as a result of the natural disaster.
According to preliminary reports, an earthquake in the region early on August 26 may have triggered a glacial avalanche along the Lende-Gola river, leading to the catastrophic flooding.
