American tennis players Serena Williams, 44, and Venus Williams, 46, have received a wildcard from the US Open organizers, allowing them to compete together in the women’s doubles category.
Serena made her return to singles competition at the end of June after nearly four years away from the sport. She faced Maya Joint in the first round of Wimbledon but was defeated in a three-set match that saw her sustain an injury.
This injury had previously prevented her from participating in doubles alongside her sister. However, they are now poised to team up at the US Open following the wildcard invitation.
Serena and Venus Williams to Compete at US Open
Prior to the US Open, the sisters had an opportunity to play together at the WTA 1000 tournament in Cincinnati, where they were defeated by the American-Ukrainian pair of Peyton Stearns and Marta Kostyuk.
The Williams sisters last played together in doubles at the US Open in 2022. Over the years, they have competed together in doubles at the US Open on nine occasions (1997, 1999, 2000-01, 2009, 2012-14, 2022) and have won the title twice, in 1999 and 2009. Serena also participated in the mixed doubles event at the US Open on Tuesday, teaming up with Carlos Alcaraz.
The star duo advanced past the first round but were eliminated before the semifinals. The organizers of this year’s final Grand Slam event have also granted Venus a wildcard for the singles tournament.
