The European Union has reaffirmed its sanctions against Iran, a decision made on July 24, in response to Iran’s military assistance to Russia amid its ongoing conflict with Ukraine. These sanctions also address Iran’s support for armed groups in the Middle East and threats to maritime freedom in the region. Additionally, the EU has decided to remove four individuals from its sanctions list.
In a recent statement, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen noted that Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Norway, and Ukraine have joined the EU’s sanctions directive against Iran. The nations have committed to aligning their national policies with the EU’s stance, which the union appreciates.
Contextually, a report by The Washington Post in March indicated that Russia had been sharing intelligence with Iran regarding the positions of American ships and aircraft in the Middle East, suggesting deepening ties between Moscow and Tehran, which may explain the increased precision of Iranian strikes.
Following the report, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi hinted at Russia’s assistance in Iran’s military efforts. Meanwhile, Dmitry Peskov, spokesperson for the Russian president, claimed that the Kremlin has no intention of interfering in the Middle Eastern conflict.
