FIFA President Gianni Infantino has addressed the contentious issue surrounding the proposed privatization of the World Cup, which has sparked outrage among UEFA and various European football federations.
In a nearly five-minute video, Infantino insisted that the initiative he has launched, titled FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), should be seen as a proposal rather than a mandate. “FIFA Forward Enterprise is indeed a proposal, an offer. It is part of a democratic process, a consultation process, and above all, it is an opportunity, not an obligation,” he stated.
Infantino elaborated that the project would only move forward if approved by the majority of FIFA’s 211 member associations and the FIFA Council. If sanctioned, it would operate as a subsidiary owned and controlled by FIFA, aimed at enhancing FIFA’s commercial and event management operations.
The proposed subsidiary would handle the marketing and organization of all FIFA-owned competitions, alongside sponsorships, broadcasting, licensing, and new projects for the benefit of all member associations. This approach aims to unlock previously untapped commercial value, according to Infantino.
Gianni Infantino Promises National Federations $40 Million Each
Infantino further detailed the financial aspects of the project, stating that each football association would have the option to access an additional $20 million through the FIFA Fast Forward Program, potentially bringing total funding to $40 million per association for the upcoming cycle.
“This is a golden opportunity to boost football development globally. However, we reiterate, this is merely an offer, not an obligation. We have a fiduciary duty to pursue this, and we are here to discuss it with everyone,” he emphasized.
In closing, the Swiss official turned his focus to fans, asserting, “Fans remain the cornerstone of the beautiful game, and the sport they follow and love will not change. FIFA will continue to govern football without any external interference. The iconic tournament we organize, such as the FIFA Women’s World Cup, will always remain.”
Infantino Plans to Sell World Cup Commercial Rights to Private Investor
The controversy erupted on Tuesday when it was revealed that Infantino aims to privatize the World Cup and sell a portion of its commercial rights to a private investor. He anticipates revenue to exceed $4 billion (approximately €3.5 billion).
This proposal has raised alarms within UEFA, with President Aleksander Ceferin stating that the plan “would cross a line that football should never surpass.” UEFA is considering a boycott of FIFA competitions, and an emergency meeting of its decision-makers was called last night.
