The Italian sports journalism community is reeling from the tragic death of Luca Esposito, a 53-year-old football journalist and founder of the online publication TuttoSalernitana. His body was found burned in a remote location in Eboli, within the province of Salerno.
Initial investigation reports suggest that Esposito was shot in the neck before his body was set on fire, presumably to destroy evidence.
Body Identified via Abandoned Vehicle
His remains were discovered late Saturday night in a secluded area known as Contrada Cioffi, along the National Road 7bis. Due to the severe damage from the fire, immediate identification was not possible. Authorities were able to confirm his identity after locating his abandoned vehicle near the crime scene.
According to preliminary findings from prosecutors, the journalist sustained a gunshot wound to the neck, with a shell casing found nearby, supporting suspicions of a targeted execution followed by the incineration of his remains.
Prominent Figure in Salernitana Coverage
Esposito, originally from Nocera Inferiore and residing in Fisciano, was registered as a public journalist in Campania since 2012. Holding degrees in Biology and Literature, he was well-known in Italian sports journalism, serving as the founder and editor-in-chief of TuttoSalernitana.
In addition to his main role, he contributed to Tuttomercatoweb and appeared regularly on Otto Channel, often attending matches at the Romeo Menti stadium to cover Juve Stabia games.
The journalist’s death has sparked a wave of reactions across the Italian press. “We are shocked and saddened. He was a challenging commentator, never dull,” remarked Pierluigi Melillo, director of Otto Channel, to Corriere della Sera.
Call for Thorough Investigation by Journalist Federations
The case has drawn attention from the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), both urging Italian authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation to determine whether Esposito’s murder is linked to his journalistic work.
Currently, prosecutors in Salerno have not established a motive for the murder. Investigators are examining both the journalist’s professional activities and personal life, appealing to anyone who knew him to provide information that could help identify the perpetrator. Authorities are treating the case as premeditated murder, keeping all lines of inquiry open.
