Hungary’s Foreign Minister Under Investigation for Ties to Russia

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó is under investigation for his alleged connections to Russia, a matter that has raised significant concerns. According to Hungarian official Mádjar, the investigation involves numerous classified documents related to foreign policy, and he has refrained from disclosing specific details to avoid influencing the process.
Mádjar assured that any information available for public release will be disclosed as soon as possible. Szijjártó served as Hungary’s Foreign Minister from 2014 until 2026, gaining notoriety for his pro-Russian stance and outspoken anti-Ukrainian sentiments.
Reports suggest that he frequently communicated with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during breaks at EU meetings. Additionally, he offered assistance to Russia during the controversial march of Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Wagner Group, in June 2023.
After the recent elections, Szijjártó has largely disappeared from public view. Observers noted his absence alongside then-Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on the evening of April 12, when Orbán acknowledged the opposition party’s victory. Mádjar alleged that Szijjártó was at the Foreign Ministry at that time, destroying documents related to sanctions.
In July, Szijjártó resigned from his parliamentary seat and announced his transition to a role at the Chinese company BYD.
