Sam Neill Dies at 78 Due to Pneumonia After Cancer Recovery

Sam Neill, the iconic actor renowned for his role in “Jurassic Park,” passed away on Monday at the age of 78, just three months after revealing he had overcome a type of blood cancer diagnosed in 2022. His death occurred in a Sydney hospital, with his manager confirming that pneumonia was the cause, according to reports from Sky News Australia.
Philip Grenz stated to TMZ that Neill succumbed to the pulmonary infection after a brief battle with the illness. He decided to share the details surrounding the actor’s death after discussions with Neill’s family, citing concerns over inaccuracies and misinformation circulating in the media.
Sam Neill’s Battle with Blood Cancer
Grenz explained, “Sam died from pneumonia. Before falling ill, Sam courageously fought and defeated lymphoma through a new treatment called CAR-T therapy. In addition to running his award-winning winery, Two Paddocks, Sam filmed four projects in the past year, all set to be released in the coming months.”
Neill had been diagnosed with a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, specifically angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, in 2022. After years of chemotherapy, he participated in a successful clinical trial of CAR-T cell therapy, a type of immunotherapy effective for certain blood cancers. He publicly declared his cancer-free status in April during an interview on 7News, expressing, “I no longer have cancer in my body. It is something extraordinary.”
His manager characterized Neill as an “extremely private man who despised fuss,” leading to a planned private burial ceremony at his farm in New Zealand, with the date yet to be announced.
Fans Encouraged to Donate to Causes He Supported
Grenz thanked those close to Neill for respecting his privacy during this difficult time. Fans wishing to honor his memory are encouraged to donate to causes he cared about instead of sending flowers. These include the Dunstan Hospital Foundation in Central Otago, where Neill lived, and the Snowdome Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on blood cancer, alongside Neill’s advocacy for improved access to oncological treatments, including CAR-T therapy, in Australia and New Zealand.
In the family’s statement regarding Neill’s death, they clarified that he did not die from cancer. Shortly after, reports emerged indicating he had been suffering from pneumonia in the days leading up to his passing.
Sam Neill’s Recent Health Struggles
Former partner and ABC journalist Laura Tingle mentioned on ABC Radio Sydney that years of cancer treatment had physically drained him. She remarked, “Essentially, he has been intensely battling various forms of cancer for at least the last five years, which takes its toll on anyone’s body. He underwent numerous chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments and fortunately managed to overcome the blood cancer he suffered from. But this significantly weakened his immune system, and I believe his tired body simply gave out, which is understandable.”
Tingle noted that in the last two weeks of his life, Neill was quite ill. Following the announcement of his death, colleagues, friends, and fans from both New Zealand and Hollywood paid tribute to the actor, remembering him as a true gentleman.
