Iraqi Prime Minister Visits Washington for Talks with Trump

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi is scheduled to travel to the United States on Monday for a meeting with President Donald Trump. This marks al-Zaidi’s first official trip abroad since taking office, as confirmed by the Iraqi government spokesperson on Sunday.

Assuming power in April with American support, al-Zaidi’s visit comes amid U.S. pressure on Baghdad to disarm pro-Iranian militias. These groups have been accused of hundreds of attacks on American infrastructure in Iraq since the onset of the Middle Eastern conflict in late February.

During this trip, al-Zaidi will be accompanied by a high-level delegation at the invitation of the U.S. president, although specific details regarding the timing of the meeting with Trump were not disclosed, according to government spokesperson Haidar al-Aboudi.

Discussions will focus on strengthening economic relations and investments, particularly in the oil and energy sectors, al-Aboudi stated during a press conference. He also mentioned that enhancing the capabilities of the Iraqi armed forces is a key topic on the agenda in Washington, as reported by Reuters.

Throughout the week-long visit, the Iraqi Prime Minister aims to attract investors to help revitalize an economy severely impacted by halted oil exports due to regional hostilities. The state monopoly on arms is seen as essential for ensuring internal stability and attracting investors capable of stimulating the economy, according to the spokesperson.

Ali al-Zaidi has committed to disarming pro-Iranian factions, despite the presence of several powerful groups that oppose such actions.
