Senator Lindsey Graham at 71
Senator Lindsey Graham, a prominent supporter of Ukraine, has died at the age of 71 due to what has been described as a “short-term and sudden illness.” His passing was announced shortly after he returned from a visit to Kyiv on July 10.
During his briefing in the Ukrainian capital, Graham expressed the belief that enhancing Ukraine’s combat effectiveness and increasing global support against Russian President Vladimir Putin could potentially bring an end to the ongoing conflict in the coming months.
He also noted that the Biden administration agreed to back a sanctions bill against Russia in response to its aggression towards Ukraine. This bill, which has been referred to as the “super sanctions” initiative, was co-authored by Graham and was introduced in the U.S. Senate on May 1.
Graham had previously urged the United States to supply Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles and advocated for actions against Putin’s shadow fleet. He pledged to implement sanctions that would devastate Russia in the event of an invasion of Ukraine following a ceasefire.
Background
- Graham served in the U.S. Congress since 1995, with terms in the House of Representatives from 1995 to 2003, and in the Senate from 2003 until his passing in 2026.
