BMW Unveils Fifth Generation X5 SUV with New Powertrain Options

The Bavarian automaker has introduced the latest iteration of its X5 SUV, first launched in 1999. The new BMW model will be available with five distinct powertrain options, including a hydrogen variant.
This launch is marked by the significance of the number five, as it represents the fifth generation of the X5, which will feature five different powertrain options.
Hydrogen is increasingly viewed as a fuel of the future, though infrastructure development is progressing slowly. In Poland, for instance, Orlen currently operates only seven hydrogen stations.
The electric version is expected to be more popular than the hydrogen variant. The new BMW iX5 will be the first fully electric model in the X5 lineup, debuting with the sixth generation of BMW’s eDrive technology. This advancement promises an impressive range of up to 845 kilometers for the BMW iX5 60 xDrive, quicker charging capabilities, an 800 V architecture, and a practical bidirectional charging feature.
Pricing for the New BMW X5
In Poland, the starting price for the new X5 is projected to be 425,000 PLN.
The market introduction for the first variants of the new BMW X5 is slated for late November 2026, while fully electric and plug-in hybrid versions are expected to join the lineup in early 2027. Production of these new models will commence a few months earlier, with BMW Group’s Spartanburg facility in the USA starting mass production of the fifth generation BMW X5 in August 2026, according to the announcement.
The X5 will be the latest model from BMW designed under the “Neue Klasse” philosophy, a nod to the company’s models from the 1960s. Last year, BMW showcased the iX3 SUV and subsequently released the i3 sedan and the new 7 Series within this design framework.
