Marcelo Bielsa Reflects on Uruguay’s World Cup Exit After 0-1 Loss to Spain

Marcelo Bielsa, the 70-year-old head coach of Uruguay, has addressed the national team’s embarrassing elimination from the 2026 World Cup, which came after a 0-1 defeat to Spain in their final group stage match.
In a surprising turn of events, the tiny nation of Cape Verde, making its debut at a major tournament, advanced instead of the Uruguayan stars.
Uruguay finished third in their group with just two points, failing to qualify for the knockout stage, while Spain and Cape Verde moved forward.
Coach Bielsa on Uruguay’s Exit: “We Failed to Realize Our Potential”
Bielsa struggled to articulate the magnitude of the disappointing outcome. The team had drawn with Saudi Arabia (1-1) and Cape Verde (2-2), needing at least a point in their last match to progress.
“It was a balanced match. We had moments when we could have created goal opportunities, but we failed to capitalize. It was very difficult for us,” Bielsa remarked after the game.
He also clarified a highly debated decision during the match: the replacement of goalkeeper Fernando Muslera at halftime.
“The change of Muslera was not my decision; it was Fernando’s. He asked to be substituted at halftime,” he explained.
This match may have marked the end of Muslera’s international career, following a series of catastrophic errors. He became the first goalkeeper since 1966 to make decisive mistakes leading to goals in all three group stage matches.
Bielsa Takes Responsibility for the Failure Amid Speculation of Dismissal
“We had access to a squad with significant potential, but we failed to utilize it to have the team perform at the level it showed before the World Cup. I was unable to provide the players with what they needed, and I feel that I left nothing for this country,” Bielsa stated.
As the one responsible for the team’s performance in the tournament, he acknowledged that there is little interest in his explanations following the disappointing results.
Another controversial decision was the substitution of Federico Valverde in the 57th minute, even though Uruguay was in desperate need of a goal. Valverde was replaced by Federico Vinas, but the change did not alter the match’s outcome.
With rumors of locker room tensions and the team’s early elimination, the future of Marcelo Bielsa as Uruguay’s coach remains uncertain.
