German Stars Neuer, Wirtz, and Musiala Criticized After Ecuador Defeat

The German national team’s star players have come under intense scrutiny following their disappointing performance in recent matches, including a 1-2 loss to Ecuador and earlier games against Ivory Coast (2-1) and Curacao (7-1).

Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, recalled to the national team by Julian Nagelsmann due to his past accolades, has yet to finish a game without conceding a goal. His performance against Ecuador was particularly criticized for poor positioning on the decisive goal, and a lack of synchronization with fellow Bayern player Jonathan Tah.

German Media Questions Neuer’s Return to National Duty

Several German journalists have raised concerns about Neuer’s current abilities, questioning whether it might have been wiser for him to stay retired after stepping away from international duty in 2024. They suggest that he should make way for Oliver Baumann, who excelled during the qualifiers.

Neuer is not the only player facing backlash; the tabloid Bild has also scrutinized Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala. The two young stars are expected to bring creativity and flair to the team’s play but have been lackluster.

Bild Calls Out Wirtz and Musiala: “Return to Form Needed”

Bild described Wirtz and Musiala as two major enigmas within the squad. The young talents, both 23, have struggled to replicate their usual effectiveness against opposing defenses, leaving fans and analysts questioning their performances. Wirtz, who previously shone at Bayer Leverkusen, seems far from his best form, especially since opting for Liverpool over Bayern. Musiala, recovering from a serious injury sustained during the 2025 Club World Cup, has yet to regain his pre-injury brilliance and was notably subdued during the match against Ecuador.

The newspaper highlighted that if Germany manages to advance past the Round of 16, they will likely face France in the following match. Without significant improvements from Wirtz and Musiala, the team risks an early exit from the tournament.
