Zelensky Comments on Order Controversy and Compares Navrotsky to Orban

Zelensky addresses the Order of the White Eagle controversy
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded to questions regarding the revocation of his Order of the White Eagle by Polish President Karol Navrotsky. In an interview, he expressed concerns about the possible implications for Ukraine-Poland relations and whether recent discussions with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk influenced the decision.
Zelensky emphasized the importance of friendship and partnership between neighboring countries, stating, “If you are not a friend or partner, who are you? This can lead to disrespect, aggression, and the radicalization of society, as seen with former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s actions, which were misguided.” He criticized the rise of hate within society, stressing that it could have serious consequences.
The President recalled his first encounter with Navrotsky, noting that despite an invitation, Navrotsky had not visited Ukraine, while Tusk had made several trips. During an official visit to Poland, Zelensky was presented with a book titled “Volhynian Tragedy” by Navrotsky. While he found this gesture inappropriate, he acknowledged its significance in the broader context.
Furthermore, Zelensky asserted that Ukraine currently protects both Poland and Europe, supporting the decision to name a Ukrainian special operations unit after the “Heroes of UPA” despite the ensuing controversy. He indicated that he had discussed this with Polish officials, but it ultimately did not affect Navrotsky’s decision.
Regarding the Order of the White Eagle, Zelensky remarked, “If they asked for the order back, we will return it; that’s not an issue. This honor was given to me by a different president, but it belongs to the people of Ukraine, and thereby to our military.” He condemned Navrotsky’s actions, suggesting they sought to garner political support through anti-Ukrainian sentiment, mirroring Orban’s strategies, which he deemed a troubling development.
Background
- On May 26, Zelensky awarded the Ukrainian special operations forces unit “North” with honorary designation “in the name of the Heroes of UPA,” drawing criticism in Poland, especially from Navrotsky, who claimed such moves provide ammunition for Russian propaganda. He suggested revoking Zelensky’s Order of the White Eagle, which was granted in 2023 by then-President Andrzej Duda.
- Following this, disputes erupted within both Ukrainian and Polish political circles. On June 19, Navrotsky announced the revocation of the order, citing “exceeded pain threshold.” Tusk criticized the decision, asserting it only served Moscow’s interests.
- In response to the revocation, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiga announced he would refuse the Polish Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit. Subsequently, other Ukrainian officials, including Kyrylo Budanov and Ambassador Vasyl Bodnar, also declined their respective Polish awards.
- On June 20, Zelensky stated he would return the order to Navrotsky via mail.
